3 Big Reasons to Learn Social Dancing

take the first stepGo ahead – take the first step.  Ask yourself why you want to dance.  What drives people to want to learn?

“My daughter’s wedding is coming up.” “We’re going on a cruise.” “I’m planning to go to South America on vacation this summer.”

Whatever the reason, you should learn to dance.

When you go to any ballroom dance studio’s website or Facebook page, I guarantee you’ll find a long list entitled, “The Benefits of Dancing”.  While the list is generally all-encompassing, for me it boils down to 3 things.

We learn to dance in order to get fit and stay healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally.

See if you don’t agree.

1. Physical Benefits:

  • Get stronger
  • Develop long, lean muscle
  • Build cardio stamina
  • Lose weight (painlessly!)
  • Improve balance and coordination
  • Beautiful poise and posture

2.  Mental Benefits:

  • Learning a new skill sharpens brainpower
  • Improve cognitive function while warding off Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases
  • Especially beneficial if you are learning something that is outside of your comfort zone
  • Enhance your sense of accomplishment when you set a goal to learn about social dance and then actually achieve that goal

3. Emotional Benefits:

  • Go ahead and lose yourself in the music – you know you want to!
  • Human touch is required and is totally PC
  • Partnership skills grow, “You lead, I’ll follow”
  • Enjoy the indescribable sensation of you and your partner moving as one
  • Increase companionship and a sense of belonging as you mingle with others who share your interest in becoming better dancers
  • Reconnect with your partner, e.g., empty nesters
  • Pain relief; they say it only hurts when you stop dancing!
  • Last, but certainly not least, stress relief  stress-1277561__340

Learn to dance and watch your health and self-image flourish.  Feel better, look better, move better.  Enjoy your life and get moving to the music.  I promise you won’t regret it.
